16th September: Mexico’s Independence Day

(Don’t get it wrong, it is not Cinco de Mayo)

Mexican Independence Day is a major celebration where people of Mexican heritage all over the world commemorates one of the most important events in their history.

It all started in the Mexican village of Dolores when a brave priest, Father Hidalgo, rang his church bell and delivered a powerful speech that motivated people to revolt against the Spanish regime. That was the beginning of the War of Independence.

Each year, on the night prior the 16th September, Mexican leaders and politicians re-enact the famous speech given by Father Hidalgo and the party starts in there. Fireworks, lots of street food, live music, dance, parades and good vibes is what you can expect from a proper Mexican Fiesta!

Fireworks fill the skies at night and the day is filled with patriotic speeches, flag-waving, parades, live music, and home-cooked feasts.
